lovenoodles-05-01-08 - feat. Jeno

After having the honor of playing on Jeno's great show, Noise from the Void, I had him back to West Add Radio to do a show for me!  Although we were both technologically one upped by his 11 year old daughter who was multiplayer gaming, chatting AND talking on her cell all at once(!), he did prove that he's got the skills to deliver.

We got in a bit late so I let him have the whole hour...more to th point I was immensly enjoying what he was playing and letting myself get exposed to some new stuff.  Pretty good life having one of your favorite DJs just play new stuff for you!

Here it is, loves

When music lovers fight

to answer, what happens if you date someone and you aren't too sure of their music? you have fun fighting about it till the death!!!

(PS we both thought this chat was hilarious and i got permission to share)

basically i call him shallow and obvious and he calls me a niche snob.  his best line is about 1982 and ibiza. that's good making fun.  and i have "opening DJ syndrome"

itsalona
(1:55:36 PM):
listening to your discobelle mix at work :-) Abel wanted to listen to something. it's just me and him and it's sooo quiet
itsalona (2:00:16 PM): you have good timing in your transitions. like me. basically we are both awesome, it would be impossible to decide who is more so
itsalona (2:04:37 PM): honey, i really like your discobelle mix.  sorry I'm just getting around to it!  xoxoxoxo
itsalona (2:07:37 PM): does freaky motherfucker sample is it all voer my face?
itsalona (2:11:21 PM): i could do without the SOS song
itsalona (2:11:45 PM): i dont hear how you edited it....
itsalona (2:23:31 PM): you make your mixes to appeal to a broad spectrum don't you...  I feel like you are throwing in some obvious tunes just to ensure more people will digest it easily
itsalona (2:23:45 PM): quantity rather than quality?
itsalona (2:23:55 PM): i hope i'm not being too critical
itsalona (2:24:10 PM): it doesn't matter since you obviously fell asleep at your desk or somtehing
ericattik (2:24:38 PM): hey hey
ericattik (2:25:14 PM): 1) yes, I do put some "obvious" joints in everything because I don't dj just for other djs...
ericattik (2:25:28 PM): because most people, SOS is semi obscure
ericattik (2:25:50 PM): djing for djs is like masterbating, it is only for you
ericattik (2:26:11 PM): its for ego and that is it
ericattik (2:26:22 PM): and its a jam
itsalona (2:27:15 PM): I think there are a lot of people out there that do not DJ and know a lot about music
ericattik (2:27:24 PM): as far as the  edit, it just cut down the track and made the arrangement  more dj palatable, added drums to hit harder
itsalona (2:27:25 PM): I think you are underestimating your audience and patronizing them
itsalona (2:27:39 PM): and preventing them from growing
ericattik (2:27:41 PM): that song will get a party poppin though
itsalona (2:27:42 PM): and learning something new
itsalona (2:27:53 PM): not at any party i play at
ericattik (2:27:58 PM): well I think the other 23 songs do that
ericattik (2:28:33 PM): there are a ton of people that know jack shit about disco
ericattik (2:28:41 PM): and only listen to hip hop
itsalona (2:28:44 PM): right
ericattik (2:28:47 PM): that will DL our mix
itsalona (2:28:55 PM): yeah but that song is played on like 98.1
itsalona (2:29:01 PM): and has been for 20 years
ericattik (2:29:02 PM): and maybe that can be bait to get them into our other shit
itsalona (2:29:17 PM): i think you are super underestimating your audience
ericattik (2:29:30 PM): yeah so het em there and they may buy something we put out later
itsalona (2:29:32 PM): or underestimating their ability to appreciate
ericattik (2:29:43 PM): what the fuck is Zapp Band
ericattik (2:29:46 PM): same shit
ericattik (2:29:50 PM): but it is a jam
itsalona (2:30:08 PM): i own it but wouldnt play it out
itsalona (2:30:15 PM): except at a wedding or office party
ericattik (2:30:17 PM): I dislike the record store clerk attitude of it is only good if it is unknown
itsalona (2:30:23 PM): thats not my point at all
ericattik (2:30:26 PM): sometimes I like comfort food
itsalona (2:30:39 PM): my point is that instead of catering to them, giving them what they want - give them something they didnt know they wanted
ericattik (2:30:46 PM): and when I play atomic dog, I enjoy it
itsalona (2:30:47 PM): and you have truly provided something ownderful
itsalona (2:30:52 PM): ok
ericattik (2:30:53 PM): and people get down
itsalona (2:30:55 PM): we will differ
ericattik (2:30:56 PM): in the club
itsalona (2:30:59 PM): ;-)
ericattik (2:31:30 PM): but I think you can sprinkle hit in with obscure and vice versa
ericattik (2:31:38 PM): it all depends on the crowd
itsalona (2:31:51 PM): you and i also have different ideas of where that line is
itsalona (2:31:57 PM): it's ok, i dont want to come off too harsh
itsalona (2:32:03 PM): i'm just being honest... :-/
ericattik (2:32:10 PM): no I like it
itsalona (2:32:13 PM): are you sure?
itsalona (2:32:18 PM): i dont want to hurt your feelings
itsalona (2:32:37 PM): and i'm totally ok with you having different ideas or opinions than me
ericattik (2:32:48 PM): and a mix that is made for a very popular web site is like playing a underground festival – you will have heads and "joe smoe" all listening
itsalona (2:32:48 PM): or tastes or whatever, i'm totally fine with it
ericattik (2:33:01 PM): I like pop and sprinkling jams
ericattik (2:33:07 PM): its party music
itsalona (2:33:11 PM): i'm all about you rockin yo shit, which ever way it is
itsalona (2:33:20 PM): yeah you are a party jams kinda guy ;-)
itsalona (2:33:24 PM): i totally said that aboutyou
itsalona (2:33:38 PM): but hey, maybe i just have opening dj syndrome
ericattik (2:33:55 PM): well, it depends on where you play
ericattik (2:36:03 PM): I just don't like the idea of not playing certain tracks that I feel are good just because 45% of the crowd really knows that song
ericattik (2:36:22 PM): just like if only 5% of the people only know it does it make it better
ericattik (2:36:35 PM): it is all okay
itsalona (2:36:40 PM): i just cant play songs that have become played out to me
itsalona (2:36:43 PM): i just cant do it
ericattik (2:37:08 PM): and that is okay - but I am far from a niche dj
itsalona (2:37:12 PM): its like pokers in my eyeballs, AND I cant genuinly move behind the decks without being sarcastic
itsalona (2:37:41 PM): i feel like i have to play what i am currently feeling, in order to project my enthusiasm correctly - and i think that is half of being the DJ your personal enthusiasm for presenting
ericattik (2:37:47 PM): but I bet most the tracks on that mix only sold 5000 units
ericattik (2:37:49 PM): if that
ericattik (2:37:59 PM): so I know i am far from a commercial dj
ericattik (2:39:07 PM): I figure I hace close to 10,000 songs at my disposal in any set so I don't have to worry to hard about that
itsalona (2:39:38 PM): i feel like you are pretty commercial
ericattik (2:39:43 PM): HA
itsalona (2:39:45 PM): i feel like SOS is pretty dang commercial
ericattik (2:40:02 PM): and what else aside from the talking heads!
ericattik (2:40:32 PM): like fuck unless it was a one off single from 1982 it is commercial!
itsalona (2:41:04 PM): dont get mad
ericattik (2:41:13 PM): im not really
ericattik (2:41:21 PM): this is a awesome discussion
ericattik (2:41:46 PM): and trust that most the people in any audience could not sing the words to the Talking Heads song
ericattik (2:42:22 PM): hahahaha
ericattik (2:42:45 PM): I swear I am enjoying this
itsalona (2:44:01 PM): k
ericattik (2:44:15 PM): I feel much like I think you are limited in the scope of range you will play you feel I am too loose in range... but it is all good... it would suck if we did the same thing
ericattik (2:45:15 PM): I do really like your selection
ericattik (2:45:20 PM): and it works for you
ericattik (2:45:32 PM): really well
ericattik (2:46:25 PM): while for me – I don't like to play too niche
ericattik (2:46:48 PM): and I feel your opinion of what is popular is much different than mine
ericattik (2:47:12 PM): although I accept your point that I may under estimate some things
itsalona (2:47:52 PM): that is funny.
itsalona (2:48:06 PM): what you said up here, i feel like it's the opposite!
itsalona (2:48:19 PM): like YOUR scope is too narrow because you are sticking to well known easy to digest things
itsalona (2:48:26 PM): instead of broadening your horizons
itsalona (2:48:28 PM): hahaha
itsalona (2:48:41 PM): this is hilarious
ericattik (2:48:42 PM): but you consider a Green Velvet b-side commercial!
itsalona (2:48:56 PM): ok if you put it that way it sounds a bit nuts
ericattik (2:49:03 PM): even techno heads don't play that track!
ericattik (2:49:18 PM): I googled it and couldn't find one mix with it
ericattik (2:49:26 PM): and it is semi new
itsalona (2:49:41 PM): did I say that track was commercail?
itsalona (2:50:06 PM): i'm just not too into green velvet that's all
ericattik (2:50:12 PM): okay let me quote "sticking to well known"
itsalona (2:50:27 PM): it's hard to define why i do or don't like something, but the reason isn't always "its commercial"
ericattik (2:50:54 PM): well but that is just taste
itsalona (2:50:54 PM): mostly i just had to stop your mix at the SOS band
ericattik (2:51:32 PM): see you are very fast to stop something because of one track... like what about what happens AFTER that?
ericattik (2:51:46 PM): like when do I hear a mix and like EVERY track
ericattik (2:51:48 PM): NEVER
itsalona (2:51:59 PM): i do all the time
ericattik (2:52:30 PM): hear a mix?
ericattik (2:52:40 PM): that you like every song?
itsalona (2:52:58 PM): yeah
ericattik (2:53:15 PM): like within your itty bitty sub genre
itsalona (2:53:17 PM): i almost always stop mixes if i hear a song i dont like...next!
ericattik (2:53:20 PM): of a sub genre
ericattik (2:53:28 PM): you are NUTS
itsalona (2:53:36 PM): YOU ARE NUTS!!!!
ericattik (2:54:01 PM): ha. so you won't like a dj if they play one song you dislike!
itsalona (2:54:05 PM): why would i listen to something i dont like? WHY
ericattik (2:54:29 PM): to expand you rhorizens with what is next
ericattik (2:54:32 PM): !
itsalona (2:54:40 PM): ACK!
ericattik (2:55:19 PM): well I can say that if I had that judgement system I would like no dj ever
itsalona (2:55:48 PM): thats not whats going down
itsalona (2:56:03 PM): i was referring more to mix cds, or mp3 mixes
itsalona (2:56:11 PM): playing out people get a lot more leeway
itsalona (2:56:21 PM): and believe me i think this way about everyone
itsalona (2:56:24 PM): not just you
ericattik (2:56:31 PM): yeah but then you never hear what is next!
itsalona (2:56:52 PM): i might skip one track but if there are two i have to skip through, I'm assuming person is not on my page
itsalona (2:56:56 PM): or i'm not on theirs
ericattik (2:57:02 PM): hahahahaha
itsalona (2:57:22 PM): you are talking about 'hearing what is next'
itsalona (2:57:32 PM): how are you going to hear new shit if you are listening to played out funk tunes!
ericattik (2:57:36 PM): well, I doubt you will ever get through one of my mixes
itsalona (2:57:41 PM): you are wasting your time on what could be spent learning something new!
itsalona (2:58:12 PM): and yeah i will have a hard time with your mixes
ericattik (2:58:15 PM): because it is a dj mix!
itsalona (2:58:16 PM): because i am not your audience
ericattik (2:58:28 PM): and the song changes every 2 minutes!
itsalona (2:58:37 PM): if you are trying to throw party jams at me
itsalona (2:58:54 PM): let's hoep tonight works out!
itsalona (2:59:04 PM): we should have a party and call it 'clash of the titans!'
itsalona (2:59:09 PM): lolololol
ericattik (2:59:26 PM): well I am not trying to shoot herion and nod off  on the beach in Ibiza in 1982 but I like some of you songs!
itsalona (2:59:36 PM): dayum!
ericattik (2:59:51 PM): so I listen and ignore what I don't like and take notes on what I do
ericattik (2:59:53 PM): HAHAHA
itsalona (3:00:16 PM): you are just fucking me to get some new influence arent you
ericattik (3:00:25 PM): HAHAHA
ericattik (3:00:39 PM): I could just check u-terns blog instead
ericattik (3:01:02 PM): and cut out the bullshit;)
itsalona (3:01:08 PM): ok this stings now
ericattik (3:01:20 PM): ahh comeon it is playful fun
ericattik (3:01:34 PM): it is good to be fiesty with each other
ericattik (3:02:24 PM): and in the meantime I will rob all the tracks I like of yours and you can keep being my sexy record snob

Alona feat. on Noise From the Void

I had the honor of being asked to play on long time SF DJ Jeno's awesome show, Noise from the Void.

It was a come full circle kind of honor for me as the Wicked and Full Moon parties in San Francisco and the Bay Area were my first parties, exposure to dance music, and quite honestly a lifestyle that I've never really shaken off.

Here is the show!

Mark. E Quark featured guest

http://www.westaddradio.com/lovenoodles/lovenoodles-04-03-08.mp3

Mark Q. is an old time friend of mine.  He used to play raves back in the late 90s and some of my favorite weekly lower haight parties (like bionic at the top!) in SF.  His style has evolved, and so has our friendship, and when we reconnected after several years I found that I was super super into what he is playing now.

This set is stony, but I gave him the freedom to do as he wished.  If one can be cerebral and soulful about nu-disco then he exemplifies that.

Seriously, the best love noodles.

P.S.  He is a vinyl manager and primo buyer at www.calsound.com

I highly recommend you buy what he recommends :-)

what? to acid acid acid

http://www.westaddradio.com/lovenoodles/lovenoodles-03-06-08.mp3

I was in the mood for acid house, but hadn't cohesively thought this one out. As I recall the first half hour is fucked up.  I think I got into the groove towards the last hour.  If I feel motivated (mm-hmm) I may edit it one day. In the meantime, dig if you feel like it.
